What's New with Asthma Medications?

There are new asthma medications coming on the scene on a regular basis.  We want to give you a summary of the latest trends and information about new medications or new uses.  These are intended for information only and Zoey LP does not endorse any of the medications described.  If you are interested in additional information about these medications, or their possible use for your child, speak with your doctor.

Xopenex - A short-acting bronchodilator is now available and approved for use in children six and older.  This bronchodilator is currently available in nebulizer solution only.  The maker of this drug, Sepracor, is working on a formula for a metered dose inhaler (MDI), and anticipates the availability in 2003.  Many people believe that the benefits of this medication include a longer duration of bronchodilation and less nervousness. For more information, visit the Xopenex website at http://www.xopenex.com/.

Orapred - A systemic corticosteroid available in a liquid, oral solution.  For any parent who has experienced the trauma of getting their child to take a liquid corticosteroid, they can relate to the problems faced with the bitter taste of the medicine.  Orapred is a solution available for pediatric patients that has a sweet taste is usually more tolerable to young children.  This may prevent a child's refusal to taste the medicine and ensure that they receive the therapeutic benefits from this category of asthma medications.  For more information, go to http://www.docguide.com/ and enter the word Orapred in the search function.

Foradil Aerolizer - A long-acting bronchodilator that comes in a dry powder inhaler.  This medicine has demonstrated benefits for those children with persistent asthma that cannot be controlled by inhaled corticosteroids alone.  In a one-year study, Foradil Aerolizer provided bronchodilation, reduced day and nighttime asthma symptoms, and reduced the need for rescue medication.  For more information, go to http://www.docguide.com/ and enter the word Foradil in the search function.  Several articles will appear.  We recommend that you read the article titled ATS: Persistent Pediatric Asthma Better Controlled With Foradil (Formoterol Fumarate) Aerolizer

Advair Diskus - A combination controller medication that combines salmeterol, a long-acting bronchodilator with fluticasone, an inhaled corticosteroid.  It comes in a dry powder inhalation device and is currently available for children twelve and older.

It is the first and only product that treats both the inflammation of the airways and the bronchospasm that results from asthma attacks in one device.  It is typically used in patients that have persistent asthma that cannot be controlled by inhaled corticosteroids alone.  While it helps control inflammation and bronchospasm, it is not a rescue medication.  For more information, visit the Advair website at http://www.advair.com/.
